Trusha Patel Named An Influential Woman in Hospitality by Hotel Management

Trusha Patel was introduced to hotel development as a teenager when she helped her father throughout the process of building properties. She then assisted her husband in his efforts to do the same before deciding to build properties on her own. But despite her decades of experience and multiple degrees, she was met with a number of roadblocks. In one memorable case, she (after much effort) got a lender to give her terms for a project, but later that night her husband talked to the lender and received better terms, even though it was Trusha’s project. “The biggest obstacle is on the lending side,” she said. “It’s understanding that the woman actually has that experience and background and the ability to be successful—and is able to repay that loan.” Patel is in the process of building two hotels in Texas and credits her perseverance for her success. “I’m one of those stubborn people in the world that out of 10 questions, I’ll get nine noes, and then that one yes will come through,” she said. “I’ve always gotten rejections left and right so getting a rejection now doesn’t stop
me. I just keep going. Because I know this is the reason why we’re here in America, the American dream—you dream it, you have the passion, you have the ability, you can do it.” It’s important to also have a network of friends and professionals, she said, and never stop learning. “A conducive ecosystem that is positive and encouraging and if you don’t know anything, research. That’s all I do is research, research, research. There will be somebody out there that will be willing to help. It doesn’t have to be another woman; what matters is their willingness to help you go a long way.”
